Dear Editor,
I recently returned from a charitable trip to Pakistan, whereby I visited both Karachi and Islamabad. I spoke with several universities, key businesses, prominent business leaders and several religious people from all generations….
On the day I returned to the office, someone had placed your magazine (January 16, 2012), on my desk. I read with interest your article on Karachi and the city in doom. For a person to have just returned from the very same place that your magazine described was somewhat bizarre, so I read with great detail your writer (Andrew Marshall’s) account.
Let me begin by saying that I often flick through your magazine and find the articles of great interest, but on this particular day and this particular article, I found certain comments to be both one sided and indeed very negative. I say that because I saw a different Pakistan to what was portrayed in your article. I do not and will not comment on the political or religious problems that the country faces, but I will go so far as to say that not everything is as bad as the image that your magazine paints.
Sure there are deaths in the cities. Please show me a city in the world, that is free from political fighting and unrest.
Sure there are differences in the political party opinions. Please show me a country in the world where the political parties agree.
Sure the innocent are suffering. Please show me a country in the world where wealth and power is equal and the innocent don’t suffer.
Sure corruption is in Pakistan. Please show me a country in the world that is corruption free.
My list could go on, but my point is that Pakistan does have problems…but so does every other country in the world in some way or another. However, in the case of ALL other nations, there are often good things to report and the media goes out of its way to promote these good things across the globe, whenever possible. The ridiculous amount of shootings in the USA are balanced off by the success of Google, Microsoft and Apple. The financial dilemmas of Greece are lost in the marketing of the Greek Islands as a holiday destination of choice. The child slave industry of India, is brushed under the carpet in favour of the nation’s growth in the global software boom. What I am trying to say, is that someone needs to look further into Pakistan and see that there are millions of great stories to write about, which would portray the country in a different light, to that what is being portrayed by your article.
When I was in Pakistan, I visited a towel manufacturing company (Alkaram Towels). They produced some $60million in export in 2011 and are aiming at $85million in 2012. A substantial increase in sales…in a recession I would remind you. The company was started by the current Chairman, Mr. Mehtab Chawla, at the tender age of nine, after his father passed away. Today the very man employs 3000 staff. Now that’s a story.
I visited universities of NED, Hamdard, Karachi, Szabist and NUST. The students are unbelievably intelligent. They spend their spare time developing APPS for android and apple. They are involved in cutting edge technology and no one in the world knows this. Why not send a reporter to Pakistan to look into this. Why not research good things in this nation, rather than just the bad things. At NUST (National Institution for Science and Technology – Islamabad)) there were 38,000 applications for medicine. There are only 83 seats for the medicine course on offer. The competition is unbelievable. In short it pushes the best to be even better. But the world doesn’t know this. Why ? Because no one wants to report on it, or no one knows about it…or both !!
Please do not get me wrong. I understand that news is news, but it is high time that the western world stopped promoting these terrorists and political wars in Pakistan and started to write something that would help the nation. Something positive. If we really care about global partnerships and economic growth, then I suggest we try and give Pakistan a helping hand. There are 180 million people in Pakistan, 65% are under the age of 25. The youth of Pakistan is its strength.. it is like a sleeping giant. If you think that India is a booming nation. I suggest you stop a second and look at Pakistan. Given a little help from the western world, Pakistan can become a dominant economy. She doesn’t want aid and she doesn’t need money… she just wants the chance to be seen in a different light. I believe we have a fundamental obligation to assist. The only question is, who will reach out first.

I ,broadly endorse the viewpoint of Tony Lazaro,and his parameter of relative evaluation.This made me recall my visit of Rotary club of Swarthmore,Philadelphia on October 29,2001, just after 9/11 when US bombing of Afghanistan was in full swing but NATO ground forces were not in action,so it was falling flat and Americans were half crazy about the situation. Noting the situation,while introducing myself , I told club president that coming from Pakistan,I’m ready to answer questions about Islam,Pakistan and our region from my own perspective to clarify confusion and ease tension in rotary members.The club president told me that their pre-arranged speaker is Attorney General of Pennsylvania but after consulting his team said that they want 20 minutes question/answer session with me after the formal meeting is over . So when my turn started, a senior member shot the question,”I say ,your president ,Musharaf is an absolute,absolute dicator, what do you say?” I said,” Fellow member, let me tell you that there no one absolute dictator and none absolute democrat, just apply it on Bush or Musharaf ,it’s all in relative terms”. Then he shot a supplementary,” I say that you,Pakistanis are extremists,you’re burning our national flag and our president,Bush’s effigy.” I told,” You’re right,we do have some extremists but show me one country or community across the world that doesn’t have extremists, only percentage varies.I think that countries have 1% to 15% extremists. There is segementation of society in all communities,there are extremists,sympathizers and the followers. The challenge of the day for leaders and world at large is to keep the intensity and numbers of sympathizers low. After that there were some questions about war in Ramadan and Talibans. At the end of the session, I found that their tension and agitation was much eased out.

Why not the private citizen of mean take the points identified by Mr. Tony Lazaro
and see how we can push this forward.
I invite each poster on this forum to scan the media and the physical wold around them
then find stories that give out positive vibrations and warn the readers up to an urge to
take some action, positively.
For example at NUST only 83 seats available for admission and 38000 applications.
Why not make an effort to increase the seats from 83 to 830 and create 5 more
NUST like institutions. All it takes is motivation not resources, to do this

One, the miracles of mico-finance through initiatives like Tameer Bank, Kashf etc. reaching to finance livelihood means for people at the bottom of the pyramid.
Two, the financial revolution,of branchless banking through the Easypaisa initiatives. For eg through Easypaisa Rs 32 billion from 9million remittances moved to the formal economy.
Three, how a society’s conscientious people take the initiative to move in and begin the reform and provide services- The Citizens Schools, Eidhee Foundation, Aurat Foundation, HRCP, , Sungi Foundation, and dozens of others
Four, how music can reclaim the national soul veering towards harmony and sensitivity. How to conduct internal reflection as a nation begins to move on a road to reform-on areas ranging from politics, socio-economic matters, foriegn policy choices, security parameters, role of religion, dynamic engergy from art, music and literature etc.
Five, how to make public debate and discourse emerge as a intangible power center/ a powerful accountability mechanism esp for those who exercise State and Executive authority. Both their functioning and policy-making roles are being challenged. Its a tough undertaking especially fully exposing corruption with evidence of all institutions and individual, exposing the blatant yet complex role of State institutions and non-state actors including sectarian militants,in the brutal killings and dissapearance of the political workers, students, journalists and others.
Six, how a society, burdened with the deadly fallout of first the international funded Afghan jihad and now the complex-continuing post-9/11 terrorism that it faces, still incredibly resilient and not paralyzed by fear and uncertainty.
Seven, above all the Pakistani state and society, in the midst of multiple crisis, is negotiating the role
of all stake-holders incl executive, parliament, army, intel agencies and the judiciary- and all this within the parameters of the Constitution. Its a chaotic situation and yet Pakistanis are working at multiple levels to push for reform, relief and the rewritting of the Social Contract.
Eight, Pakistan acknowledging the need for devolution of power, as opposed to holding on to centralized power, has undertaken the most significant Constitutional reforms ever taken by an country in recent times. 25 percent of the articles were amended in the Constitution unanimously by otherwise warring political parties. More devolution is inevitable as the demand for first tier local level devolution gathers more momentum.
Nine, the content of Pakistan’s politics is likely to change , new political voices and a vibrant media, over time, will force it to become more responsive to the voters’ needs.
Ten, for those who are willing to look at Pakistan without prejudiced there is tremendous learning to be done. In a global context where so much has become unhinged, Pakistan is the laboratory of creating ‘the new’..a kind of new that those in the midst of Arab Spring, the Wall Street protest, the Euro-crisis, the new media challenges, rising corruption etc all need to engage with.
The “new’ that would be more responsive both in terms of State institutions servicing the society’s needs, the content of politics, functioning accountability mechanisms, popular including social media’s critical role in reform and the conduct of a more informed discourse. Equally interesting is how Pakistan after its 60 long relationship with the US now works to reicast the relationship.
Maybe watch Pakistan for the ‘new’ that is a global need..and not only for the terrorists, extremists and militants in every corner!

In 2006, I visited Lahore to perform at a music festival. My family encouraged this, however they were fearful for my safety as a result of the American Media’s mass propaganda campaign regarding terrorism and tribal savagery. During my trip, I was met with a bitter sweet feeling every time a Pakistani would ask me to take a message of peace back home with me. I am thankful to the Amin family for showing me the true spirit of Pakistan. Courage, kindness, and wonderful hospitality, is what I think of when Pakistan comes to mind.
The media must portray civil unrest, terrorism, and instability, to remind the people of the World why they need their governments. It’s a bunch of bullocks. The reason is simply that the Media has been crafted to exploit and create a hive-mind mentality that is subservient – not only to Governments – but to a corrupt Globalist Agenda.
There is a mass Global awakening, and the more I see governments using up all of their resources for militarization, the more confident I am that they are truly afraid of us.

Hello Everyone.
I am not familiar with blogs or how they work….
I only know that I am familiar with fair play and how that should be. I am humbled at the responce that my article has taken across the world.
But at this moment I really do not know where I am going with this journey, only that it has started and I will follow my gut instincts with where it goes. What is blindingly obvious is that everyone seems to know the truth, but no one wants to be seen to change it…. or start the change process.
My challange is therefore as follows….
If the youth of Pakistan supports the “attitude of change” and the elders (who want to see a better Pakistan), support the youth, then the numbers will far outweigh the negative people (both in Pakistan and the western world), who constantly want to bring the country to its knees. Pakistan’s future is not in political hands. It is in the hands of the people. Brave people !!!!
The challenge is how many of these brave people will hold hands together ??.

Finally, something gets shaken within us. If the media channel is not dispensing the correct positive image, then that is because
the population is responding to the negative images. The sequence therefore is to force the media to change its mode in dispensing
news and commentry. The we make this change come about is to send them a barrage of letters, email and phone calls.
We need to remember, these are commercial enterprises, they will go the way its audience travels. We just need to
tell them which way we are headed.
Responsibility lies on us and the population alone, the rest is just escapism. If you want action, then act, indivdually first!

I am happy to read your rebuttal last night after I returned from Umra. I am now totally convinced that there is nothing they will do to harm defame Pakistan. Every every write is nothing but venom against Pakistan and its people. Seeing the Pakistani Passport at the entry point and a person dressed in typical Pakistani attire invites most disrespectful behaviour.

My point was,we need to salvage ourselves and not further propound it.As a very useful technology is available in the shape of the global village wired by the media,why not use it to our advantage.
Specially nowadays,when we have more than a hundred news channels and a proliferation of print media,it should be used as a vehicle to bring about a positive change in the mindsets of our youth specially.
Nobody from outside can come and solve our problems.We need to unravel the positive forces from the grip of the negative elements.In this the media can project the issues in a more positive manner,instead of spreading more venom and hatred.

I read the article thrice because it is the voice of so many Pakistanis including me who all are of the same view and opinion as that of Mr. Tony Lazaro, Managing Director Rising Stars Management Group Tony Lazaro. Either these Pakistanis do not speak or their voice is so low that cannot be heard by others.The fact is that they do not raise their voice in loud with a fear that they will be condemned. It is in all walk of life.But I have the greatest complain with my Pakistani brothers and sisters who are in the electronic media that it is their foremost national duty to high light Pakistan’s brighter side.
In the countries which claims of high polished society of the world. If we compare our self with all the facilitations they posses and then find out the ratio of such negative things in both the society then we will come to the conclusion that the same is far less than the advanced countries. I, agree with Mr.Tony Lazaro that these things are also there in all the countries who claims of having cultured society.
Well without going into further details, I always ask myself that what is my responsibility in the society to whom Allah has blessed with education and a little knowledge. So I have started preaching and telling the people around me and show them the brighter side of Pakistan and tell them what they could do and I could do.My slogan is think positive, things will be positive.

Let us discuss your point a little bit.
1. Solar Electricity:
The Solar panels that convert Sunlight into electricity are still very expensive for the general
population. so the government subsidizes it. How does government of Australia gets the money
to subsidize the solar electric installations. From Taxes. See the problem.
In Pakistan the income tax is only on paper, there is no effective collection system. Then there is the
fear that Pakistan is going to be attacked. So most of whatever is collected is spent on Military. The money
therefore, is in the hands of the population which they hide under the bed. The net result ofs money being
out of circulation.
Money is like water, it has to flow to be useful or stay in a lake to be available to be used. Then we use
it to run daily function and the water then goes back to the resorvior. Small private resorviors do not
help the population in any way. The money is the same way, it is in small private resorviors.
So how is Pakistan Government going to subsidize the population for solar electricity.
2. Corruption:
Yes Corruption exists, but if you read lazaro’s letter you will notice that there are businesses running
even with the corruption. People learn to live with complications. So corruption is not a real issue it is
an inconvenience.
Then What is the Issue:
The issue is with the population. People like you and I, who sit on a chair and talk endlessly about
problems. Never wiggling a finger to resolve them. As the saying goes, when everything is said and
done, we all deserve what we get.
If you wish to install solar electricity, you will have to dive into your private pool of money and pay for it. Then Perhaps
the money that is spent gets into circulation and becomes beneficial for your neighbour. Someone has to start it
and it has to be either you or me. Niether the government or Allah Mian will help us on this one, only our motivation
and nationalism will.

dear syed wajahat sahab, i do not want to contradict you, but is the Bangladesh any better ? they are using solar panels and wind energy on a much greater scale. same is the case with india. india production of electricity with wind energy exceeds 5500 megawatts and they have plans to generate more than 50000 megawatts with alternate energy sources , wind and solar, by the year 2030.
our governments have simply failed to plan. every thing is being handled without any vision .
i think neither the ab sense of tax collection nor the corruption. our main issue is the competency . few and fewer jobs are being filled on merit. the people who take positions without deserving it, not only fail to perform but in fact become anti catalyst for the ones who are waiting for promotions based on merit. more dangerous and more damaging is the attitude of those appointed without merit, is their returning back of favors to the ones responsible for their illegal, out of turn appointments.
and i think it all started with the first awami government of zulfiqar ali bhutto and now it has taken such a big toll on our national assets that every institution is reeling down under incompetent management. steel mills, pia, wapda, are the finest examples.

Agreed on all points. However, my point it very simple, why is it that we dwell on the government to plan and
execute all these projects. Is it possible that the people are not motivated.
Please take a look at the youtube videos created in Bangladesh called “Bangla Bangers”. These are a group of
mechanics that buy old junked cars and create most beautiful automobiles of their own designs from them.
What has the government got to do with that. ON the same token the Gremeen bank was not started by
the government. It was one person who studied in USA and said to himself, “I can do better in my own country”.
Returned, set up a system of banking and loans, taught the world about it, and won the noble prize for economics.
What is stopping Pakistani citizen from doing this. In my opinion the educated people like you and me
just sit and pass judgement on government and do not get up above our padded chairs.
Just look at the inventions that are being made in Pakistan to day. They are all on YOutube, trucks
wind powered battery chargers, automobile. These are all examples on which whole industries
can be started. But the capitalists citizenry is not looking in that direction. Their sites are either
on the government jobs or the USA.
Government is as good as the people of a country. People have to change first, the government will
follow the population attitudes.

sitting on padded chairs and passing judgements on govt, well it is true for ME 100 percent .although i think employment generation for more than 300 people is more than enough contribution it self.
but there are good, competent, sincere, loyal people around. and i do not see any special fault in our general population which is not present in the populations of other countries. members of our society when work in MNCS they excel like any one else, even better. today, a Pakistani is in line to head Unilever, a Pakistani is in line to head nokia-siemens, and may be proctre and gamble as well. there are 3 Pakistani executive directors in the world bank one of them was LOANED to British govt as secretary finance for 3 years in the tony Blair govt., on special british request. this is only my knowledge about Pakistanis working abroad. and mind you i am not in the corporate world.
today industry is closed for 5 days a week in Punjab, do you think it is the fault of our businessmen, general population ??? general consumer is facing minimum 14 hours to 18 hours of power load shedding, is the general public responsible for this type and level of future planning ???
yes i agree, we have bad people among us. may be more than our fair share in the world population. but sir, we have a larger share of bad governents, bad economy managers and worse planners.

Hello again everyone,
I had a spare five minutes, so I decided to look at this blog and see what was happening. Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that individuals are just jumping onto the blog and outlining what is wrong with Pakistan – Energy, Money, Water, Taxes, Government, Military …etc etc etc.
Maybe I missed something, but it appears that there are several problems with the country. I knew that before I wrote to Times Magaizine. We all know that !!
The problems are unlimited, but every country in the world has unlimited issues with just as many good and bad people.
What I have said and will continue to say is that Pakistani’s Youth needs to get together and agree to “CHANGE” ….first.
Until there is a unilateral agreement to all hold hands and change together, then what is the point in worrying about what is wrong.
Nature dictates that you cannot run before you can stand.
In the same way….
Life dictates that you cannot decide what to change, until you understand that you unilaterlly want to change….
Just some food for thought !!

محترم سلام، میں سافٹ ویئر انجینئیر ھوں، گزشتہ کئی سال روزگار کیلئے لیبیا میں مقیم تھا اور ہر ماہ ہزاروں ڈالر ذرمبادلہ واپس ملک بھیجتا رھا۔ اسی دوران کراچی کورنگی انڈسٹریل ایریا کے پہلو میں واقع کے۔ڈی۔اے کی اورسیز ہاوسنگ اسکیم مہران ٹاؤن میں اپنا مکان بنانے کیلئے پلاٹ خریدا۔ لیبیا میں جاری حالیہ خانہ جنگی کے بعد واپس آیا تو خبر ملی کہ سارے مہران ٹاؤن پر موجودہ حکومتی جماعتوں کے زیرِ سایہ لینڈ مافیا قابض ھوچکی ہے۔ جب اپنے خریدے مکان پر پہنچا تو قابض افراد نے اسلحہ دکھا کر وہاں سے بھاگ جانے کو کہا۔ ناچار مہران ٹاؤن تھانے گیا انھوں نے رپورٹ درج کرنے سے انکار کیا کہ اوپر سے حکم ھے لہذا قابض افراد کے خلاف کاروائی نہیں کرسکتے۔

آسمان سے گرا کجھور میں اٹکا کی مثل آج اپنے ملک واپس آکر شب و روز محنت کی کمائی سے خریدے مکان سے بے گھر ھوں۔ اب دلبرداشتہ ہو کر جنگ زدہ لیبیا میں دوبارہ واپس بھاگ جانے پر مائل ھوچکا ھوں اور اس وقت کو کوستا ھوں جب وطن کی مٹی کی محبت میں مبتلا ھوکر اپنی ساری کمائی اس ملک کو دینے کو فرض سمجھتا رھا۔ یہی حال ھے مزید دیگر سات ھزار ھم وطنوں کا جو مہران ٹاؤن میں اپنی خون پسینے کی کمائی لُٹتی دیکھ کر صرف بے بسی کی تصویر بننے پر مجبور ھیں۔ بارہ ارب ڈالر سے زائد ترسیلاتِ زر وطن بھیجنے والے محب وطن اورسیز کیلئے یہ صلہ ہے یا پھر کوئی سزا؟ آپ سے اپیل ہے کہ ان ھزاروں بیرون ملک مقیم محنت کشوں کی کمائی کو لٹنے سے بچانے کیلئے ھماری مدد کریں۔

Yet another prove that the Jewish lobby is controlling the world media power and they never chose to write anything good for Muslim, this is called the ignorance of truth, ignorance of culture.
The current media is just another branch of commercial business and playing either with the Agency money of business group funding. They never investigate any story the truth behind the real news.

As I have also been in several executive consulting roles with many international media giants over the last 15+ years, I can only say that unfortunately these issues just happen – opinions and stories are cut or re-structured by those famous Gate Keepers and this time we got something out, at least!
There is nothing we can do, or even anything we should do, to try to change the role they have but we should not stop broadcasting the message of that other Pakistan we all know. It only requires systematic, continuous and well planned flow of stories and information through media and journalists who want to tell stories openly and professionally.
Trust me, the change will come and there will be plenty of media people knocking our doors to get the best stories. Not maybe tomorrow but that day is definitely not far away. I have been scheduled to give few interviews in couple of weeks and I do feel that the first notes of the Change are already there!

If I could throw my two cents into the mix, I’d like to remind us all that we are simply perpetuating more prejudice and bias by perpetuating zionist conspiracies.
Let’s face it, Pakistan isn’t exactly the poster child for an enlightened and modern economy but we have certainly been the victims of western biases expressed in the media. The key to moving forward is to articulate, as best we can, a fitting rejoinder to publications that present one-sided stories. And I’d also like to propose Tony Lazaro for President of Pakistan but that may be unconstitutional.
Let’s have less musings on jewish conspiracies and more pressure on the likes of Time and others to sort themselves out.

As far as the ranting about Jews, CIA, India and other Blame games, let’s for a change pause for a minute and analyse our own selves and behaviours. When we point a finger towards somebody , four of our fingers are pointing towards our own selves as a reminder that we need to admit our mistakes too.
What stops the Muslim world to set up their own world class media outlets and promote a positive image for themselves. They have got the numbers, brains and the billions too. Let us stop acting like a whining kids. The world is a vast play field and every country /Nation/ Group is in a cut throat competition. Let us focus on our strengths, rectify our mistakes, start investing in Knowledge and science and start acknowledging the light at the End of the Tunnel.
We have survived the Dhaka Fall, Three Military Dictatorships, Earthquakes and Floods. We have produced World record holders in Science , Arts and Sports. We will survive the current turmoil too.

USA has always been using their media to tarnish Pakistan’s repo worldwide..So, nothing new with that.
They never ever see anything good in us but magnify and shout out loud about all negativities about us..

I was very touched by your earlier article written in response to an
article in TIME magazine titled as a doomed city.. which in this case
was Karachi. We all know what a vibrant city Karachi is today. Yes
like any BIG city of 18m + we have problems that need to be addressed,
however Karachi is FAR from doomed city or for that matter Pakistan a
doomed country.
It disappoints me to note that TIME once again chose to selectively
print few sentences of your e-mail below. I subscribe to TIME myself
and like you I intend to cancel my subscription. I cannot and will
note support a magazine that cannot write facts whether good or bad.
Once again the youth of Pakistan will lead this country to moderation,

There is no point in starting up a propaganda surge against Jews or Times magazine, or even the Western world media. That is not why I wrote to Times.
I wrote to them because they were wrong to carve up my email. It diluted everything that I wrote….
It’s that simple.
So now that is done.. ….IT IS DONE !

How do we move on ?
Simple, Pakistan has a wealth of clever people, students who are outstanding at creating applications for iphones and ipads…. android apps as well. So we need to start looking at different ways to take our story…”THE STORY” to the Western world. I can help. I have friends who are based in TV and the media, who will help…. but don’t know how to get the stories. People who want to know the truth.
Remember, they are a result of what they are taught. What they hear…so they are not all against Pakistan. They are just badly informed. Every Pakistani working abroad is not treated badly, but they all come across western people who are totally confused and mislead. So we change it !!
What we need to do is build a plan with systematic stories that each week, portrays something positive. I will find the way to get these to the rest of the world.
All this hype and passion from Pakistan, has shown me that strength is not what is required by your nation. Its leadership and shaping.
Imagine a hockey team with the best players in the world. Yet they cannot win anything. Why?… because no one is around to shape and groom the team.
To coach the best moves, create the best game plans and to execute what has been practised on the training field.
I am planning to come back to Pakistan in the next 6-8 weeks. I am working on a plan to get your positive stories into the western world.
Just stay positive. ..
We can make a change. But we will do it by being humane and smart. Not by slurring the others.
Pakistan is where it is because of the last 10 years. We will mend it over the next 10- years…maybe longer !!
But a quick fix will never work….so let’s not pretend.
When we put on body weight, we do it over a number of years, two maybe three. A quick fix diet will never work. What does work is changing habits over time and exercising to re-develop our body mechanism. Change the type of food, moderate the intake of certain calories..and that way we lose weight and it stays off.
Changing the shape of Pakistan is no different….but it will take time.
You are a young Nation….believe me you ALL HAVE TIME.
